OpenAI releases GPT-6.1 Terra: near Sol performance, half the price, faster coding
GPT-6.1 Terra nearly matches GPT-6.1 Sol on benchmarks while being twice as cheap, with stronger visual understanding, computer use, more natural text, and faster coding.
GPT-6.1 Terra: near Sol performance, half the price, faster coding
The new GPT-6.1 Terra model nearly matches GPT-6.1 Sol on benchmarks, but is now twice as cheap. OpenAI focused on visual understanding, computer use, and more natural text. For coding, speed on Terminal-Bench 4.0 doubled compared with the previous Terra.
The model is also much more token-efficient. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, the same subscription tier now covers more tasks than with GPT-5.6 Terra. On Agents’ Last Exam, with medium reasoning, the result is 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at roughly one-third of the cost. This is comparable to GPT-6 Astra, but with a token price ten times lower. Tasks complete more than three times faster than Astra and Sol.
According to OpenAI, at maximum reasoning, Terra is more than three times more token-efficient than Claude Opus 5.5 and four times cheaper per token, making it about nine times cheaper per task.
The model is already available in all paid plans and via the API.
Why it matters
AnalysisCheaper token usage and higher benchmark efficiency make the model practical for agents, coding, and high-volume API workloads.
