MIT Researchers Teach AI Agents to Exchange KV Cache Instead of Text
Executive TL;DR30s read

MIT researchers introduced SwaT, a multi-agent architecture that transfers processed KV cache between models, reducing context loss and speeding up agent workflows.

In multi-agent systems, context constantly has to be passed between models. For example, when one agent finishes its part of a task and another has to continue the work. Usually this is done with textual summaries, but creating and reprocessing them requires extra computation, and some information is lost.

Researchers proposed SwaT (Swarm Telepathy), an architecture that lets models exchange the KV cache, meaning already processed context, instead of textual retellings. It even works across different model families.

On benchmarks, SwaT combined with cache compression showed an average 40% higher answer quality and a 4x speedup compared to passing textual summaries. Even more interestingly, this method made it possible to transfer visual information from a vision-language model (VLM) to a standard text model.
