OpenAI Prepares Next Stage of Codex Development

OpenAI has announced the next stage of Codex development, which includes transitioning to the cloud and creating long-lived agents.
For the next generation of models, a single laptop will no longer be sufficient.
Tibo from OpenAI stated that based on recent tests, Codex can already be considered an excellent framework for working with AI models.
However, in his opinion, in just 2-3 months it will seem quite primitive. We are awaiting another significant leap in how we interact with frontier models.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has acquired Ona to transition Codex from local machines to secure persistent cloud environments. This is directly referred to in the announcement as the "next stage of Codex," stating that agents will be able to continue working even after you close your laptop. Tibo is also quoted in this announcement.
Another interesting detail is the vacancy that OpenAI recently opened: Software Engineer, Cloud Agents.
The team is building infrastructure for long-lived agents: orchestration, sandboxes, storage, identification, observability, and cost control. The job description states that engineers will create systems for "orchestrating agents at scale" within Codex, ChatGPT, and the API.
Putting all this together, one might hypothesize that the next stage is not just a more powerful model, but a model capable of autonomously deploying the infrastructure needed to perform tasks.
Separate computers. Separate agents. Shared memory. Tools. Permissions. Days of continuous operation.
In such a scenario, the laptop becomes more of a control panel than a place where all the work is done.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis is important as OpenAI continues to advance its technologies, which could change the way we interact with artificial intelligence. The transition to cloud solutions opens up new possibilities for creating autonomous agents.
