Neuralink Demonstrates Thought-to-Speech Restoration for the First Time

Executive TL;DR30s read

Neuralink has showcased its N1 implant's ability to decode brain signals into speech for a patient with ALS.

Neuralink has demonstrated the process of restoring speech from thoughts for the first time.

Kenneth Shock, a patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), received the N1 chip implant in January 2026. Today, the company showcased how the chip reads brain signals and matches them with the words the person intends to speak. Essentially, the patient simply imagines speaking, and the system converts the commands sent by the relevant brain areas to the larynx and mouth into phonemes, and then into words.

Previously, researchers from UCSF and Berkeley had been working on similar studies for quite some time, but Neuralink has reproduced the process first.

Incidentally, the voice used by the computer has been specially restored to match Ken's voice before his illness. His wife calls this voice "Original Ken".
