Reddit user explains why Claude Code weekly limits are burning almost 4x faster
Executive TL;DR30s read

A Reddit user compared token usage across two weeks and found that each 1% of Claude Code's weekly limit now yields far fewer output tokens, pointing to subagents, reasoning time, and UI refresh requests as likely causes.

A Reddit user investigated why Claude Code weekly limits began being consumed almost four times faster.

They collected token usage statistics for last week and this week and found a significant difference.

Previously, each 1% of the weekly limit corresponded to about 119,000 output tokens. Now that figure has fallen to 31,000, meaning limit efficiency dropped by a factor of 3.8.

Among possible causes, they highlighted several problems:

  • Subagents re-read files from the beginning, consuming additional tokens.
  • In Claude Code version 2.1.317, reasoning duration increased by 3.4x. The issue is tracked in issue #106878.
  • The summary refresh timer in the interface, by their estimate, consumes 22.7% of API requests. The issue is described in issue #86879.

As a result, according to their observations, Claude Code consumes weekly limits almost four times faster than before.

Why it matters

Analysis

This matters for developers who rely on Claude Code weekly quotas: subagent re-reads, longer reasoning, and background UI refresh requests can quietly accelerate token burn and make limits feel unexpectedly tight.
