Anthropic Sets Up Biology Lab in San Francisco Bay Area

Anthropic has opened a lab for physical biological experiments and is considering using Claude to control laboratory robots.
Anthropic has set up a biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area and is expanding its work toward physical experiments (Reuters).
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences, confirmed the lab's existence. The company wants to use Claude to control laboratory robots.
“We are at the very early stage of using AI to automate laboratory work.”
A representative of Anthropic later clarified that the lab was not created specifically for drug development, but declined to provide details.
That leaves open which areas of biology the lab will pursue. The work may extend beyond pharmaceuticals to more fundamental biological processes, including aging.
In any case, Anthropic is increasingly viewing biology as one of the important application areas for AI.

Computer Use via AI
Anthropic's technology (introduced in Claude 3.5 Sonnet) enables neural networks to control operating systems like a human: taking screenshots, analyzing window coordinates, moving the mouse cursor, clicking buttons, and entering text without using specialized APIs.
