Karpathy: The world is split into four levels of AI adoption

Andrej Karpathy describes a global AI adoption gap, ranging from billions with little exposure to a small group inside labs watching autonomous agents work.
About 6 billion people have barely used AI.
And only ~5,000 people watch it complete work that once took years in just a few weeks.
Andrej Karpathy shares a view of the world divided into four levels.
Level one. About 6 billion people (~75%) who have had almost no interaction with AI.
Level two. Between 1 and 2 billion people (~20%) who see chatbots as an improved version of Google.
Level three. About 20 million programmers and mathematicians (0.2%) who watch AI agents complete projects that used to take months from a single prompt.
Level four. About 5,000 people (~0.00006%) inside AI labs.
They watch thousands of agents work together for weeks, make new scientific discoveries and evolve so quickly that people can no longer keep up with checking their results.
ChatGPT launched on November 30, 2022. Less than four years have passed, but the gap is not narrowing. It is only growing.
Why it matters
AnalysisIt highlights that AI's most transformative use is still concentrated among a tiny technical elite, while most of the world has only begun to treat AI as a better search engine.
