Ship Promises to Reduce Claude Inference Costs by 50%

Executive TL;DR30s read

Ship introduces a new approach to lowering inference costs for the Claude model, promising a 50% reduction. This is achieved through query optimization and selecting the most efficient execution strategy.

Instead of directly calling claude-opus-4-8, you can simply specify: ship-like/claude-opus-4-8.

The developer tested this in the terminal on the same Anthropic model with the same prompt and achieved the claimed savings. (see demo)

The Idea Behind Ship

The idea behind Ship is that not every request requires the same expensive execution method. Typically, the model always runs the same forward pass, regardless of the complexity of the task.

Ship chooses a strategy after receiving the request. The system can use a single model, a cascade of models, an ensemble, or a combination with tools, and then select the cheapest option that maintains the quality and behavior of the original model.

This is not just routing to a cheaper model. Ship also ensures that key characteristics of the response do not change: format, patterns of tool invocation, failures, and overall capability level.

Responses do not have to match token for token. It is important that they are comparable to the reference model in terms of quality and behavior.

For the user, the price remains 50% lower in any case. Even if a specific request costs Ship more, the company covers the difference.

The project is backed by Thesean Labs—a team with former specialists from Anthropic, DeepMind, and quantum experts.
