Mathematicians Express Concerns Over AI's Impact on the Field
The President of the French Mathematical Society called AI 'doping', while prominent figures like Cedric Villani and Terence Tao voice alarm over rapid progress and its threat to mathematical practice.
Mathematicians continue to express concerns regarding the influence of artificial intelligence on mathematics. The President of the French Mathematical Society stated that AI is "doping" that has invaded the profession. PhD students worry about their future employability after defense, and many speak of the destruction of mathematics as a form of human activity in general.
Famous Fields Medalist Cedric Villani recently admitted he was shocked when he learned about the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations achieved by AI.
"The atmosphere of the end of history... This is a cataclysm that mathematics has never known."
Interestingly, Villani was previously a skeptic of Large Language Models (LLMs), calling them "just functions f(x)=y" and claiming they understand nothing at all.
Terence Tao, meanwhile, joined those advocating for slowing down AI development. He stated:
"The pace of progress is insane, and there is no reason to take such fast steps – no reason at all."
However, after this statement, he faced criticism on social media for changing his stance only after AI began to threaten his own profession.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis highlights a growing existential crisis in academia, where even top skeptics are forced to acknowledge the disruptive potential of AI as it solves previously intractable mathematical problems.
