The Generalist startup has introduced the GEN-1.5 model, capable of learning from a single example without additional fine-tuning. This emergent property could revolutionize AI training methods.

Generalist Startup Announces Robot That Can Learn Actions from a Single Demonstration

It only takes one demonstration to show GEN-1.5 what to do, and it can immediately continue to perform the task independently in a one-shot manner, without fine-tuning or weight updates.

The demonstration is inserted into the model's context window, similar to a prompt in LLM. The model treats this as part of the sequence and continues from there.

Interestingly, this is an emergent property. The authors explicitly state that they made no architectural changes for in-context learning; they simply fed the model a vast amount of physical experiences (homes, warehouses, factories, etc.), and it began to exhibit the ability to learn from a single example, much like GPT-3 did in the past.

Moreover, the blog mentions that sometimes in-context learning works even better than 1-5 steps of fine-tuning on the same data.

Why it matters

Analysis

This technology opens new horizons for AI learning, reducing the need for processing large amounts of data to achieve results. It could significantly simplify the integration of AI across various fields.
