Andrew Ng on AI Development in China and the USA
Andrew Ng believes that China has become more open in AI development than the USA. He emphasizes the importance of knowledge exchange between countries.
Andrew Ng: "I might be the only person in the world who has had both Sam and Dario work under me."
"There is one thing I definitely could not have predicted a few years ago: in the end, China has become much more open than the USA when it comes to the ways of developing and implementing innovations in AI.
I know the American AI ecosystem very well because I founded Google Brain and participated in its development. I might be the only person in the world who has had both Sam and Dario work under me. Therefore, I am well acquainted with the people behind these teams.
When ChatGPT was released at the end of 2022, the USA was far ahead of China. But since then, China has skillfully utilized its capabilities by betting on open source and the ecosystem of open model weights. Chinese teams conduct research and publish scientific papers online for free, where anyone can read them.
By the way, many leading American teams closely study a large number of Chinese research papers, adopting ideas and benefiting significantly from them. Honestly, many technologies that leading AI teams in the USA use today emerged thanks to research innovations they learned from Chinese works.
Therefore, I believe that knowledge exchange goes both ways."
