Claude demonstrates impressive results in protein design, surpassing traditional methods. The experiment showed that AI can significantly reduce the time needed to develop new protein structures.

Claude Can Design Proteins Faster Than Chemists

Anthropic conducted an experiment where Claude was tasked with designing miniature binding proteins for 15 different protein targets. This is a task that typically takes a specialist several weeks for one target. The designs were validated in a real laboratory by independent companies Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience.

As a result, Mythos Preview and Opus 4.8 managed to succeed with 14 out of 15 targets. Some designs bound several times stronger than the best published results. The hit rate was nearly 27%, while the typical rate in the field is about 10-15%.

The models conducted all experiments almost autonomously, documenting their processes and orchestrating third-party specialized models for protein design on GPUs. Humans only approved access.

Claude even learned to create complex β-sheet structures. In one chemical experiment, the agent independently suggested the same follow-up experiment that the laboratory conducted independently three days later.
