Claude Code cuts background subagent status update costs by 99%
In the CLI version of Claude Code, status updates for background subagents now use Haiku 5.5 based on short notes, reducing limit consumption.
Claude Code changed how it updates the status of background subagents in the CLI. Previously, every 30 seconds a subagent updated its status line, which required reprocessing the entire conversation history. Now this task is handled by Haiku 5.5, which generates a report from short notes, while the subagent itself continues running on the previous model.
The cost of updating subagent status has dropped by 99%. As a result, sessions with background subagents consume about 5% less of the limit, meaning roughly 6% more requests can be sent within the same limit.
The change applies only to the CLI. The Claude Code app does not use a subagent status line, so there was nothing to optimize there.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis reduces limit consumption for background subagents and allows roughly 6% more requests within the same limit.
