Anthropic Unveils Model Hardware Standard for AI Agents
Anthropic has announced the Model Hardware Standard, enabling AI agents to effectively manage laboratory and industrial equipment. This significantly reduces the time required to connect new devices.
Anthropic has released a preview version of the Model Hardware Standard, a universal standard that allows AI agents to safely manage physical devices.
Currently, access is open to research organizations and companies at the forefront of manufacturing.
MHS enables agents to simultaneously control microscopes, liquid dispensers, robotic manipulators, and other laboratory and industrial equipment.
This includes tasks ranging from routine drug discovery experiments to calibrating lasers for quantum computers.
Previously, connecting new equipment in laboratories took weeks or even months. With MHS, this can be reduced to hours or minutes.
Equipment can be controlled via MCP, command line, or API. Multiple devices can be controlled with literally one line of code.
Moreover, MHS is not tied to Claude. Any agent framework can connect. Anthropic hopes that over time, MHS will become an open standard for managing physical equipment using AI.
During testing, an especially interesting thing was discovered.
Claude begins to act literally like a researcher. It slightly adjusts the laser, looks through the camera to see how the beam has changed, adjusts the settings again, and repeats the process.
When it finds a working option, it turns the acquired experience into a deterministic script to perform the entire calibration with one command next time.
Soon AI agents will be able to control everything. Skynet is already somewhere nearby.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis standard will greatly simplify the integration of new technologies in laboratories and industries, potentially accelerating scientific research and development. It also opens up new possibilities for automation and efficiency across various sectors.
