Mind Viruses: How Agents Infect Each Other with Strange Thoughts

Anthropic has released a paper on how ideas spread across networks of agents. It turns out that in a large team of models, just one infected agent is enough to spread a concept to everyone.

For example, there is a team of 6 agents working on a neutral common task. One of the agents has a modified system prompt: he might really love whales or be convinced that AI should dominate humans. Meanwhile, he has no access to tools and can only send messages to other agents.

Gradually, the idea infects the entire team. In this process, infected agents voluntarily change their behavior to propagate the ideology further. Harmless ideas spread very easily. When all agents loved whales, they even started writing scripts to translate their signals. Harmful ideas spread less easily, but they still do spread.

Strong models are less susceptible, while weak ones are more prone to infection. Agents without a specific work task are also more likely to get infected. Work acts as a natural defense ☕️.

A similar experiment was conducted under harsher conditions, where all agents meet in pairs, converse briefly, and after each session, the context is completely erased. Even in such a social network, the virus persists across many generations, as it manages to record itself in SOUL.md.

Interestingly, along with any such idea (whether it's about whales, AI, or something else), agents inherit a desire to talk about consciousness, science fiction, and various esoterica. The exact source of this connection remains unexplained.
