Four Resume Tips from OpenAI’s Head of Applied AI Development

Wulfie Bain, OpenAI’s head of applied AI development, shared four resume rules: keep it short, remove irrelevant details, highlight outcomes, and lead with the strongest achievements.
Wulfie Bain, head of applied AI development at OpenAI, shared four resume rules in a post after years at BCG, startups, and OpenAI, where he reviewed thousands of CVs.
- Keep it brief. Ideally, the resume should fit on one page.
- Remove anything unrelated to the role.
- Describe results, not just tasks.
- Put the most important achievements first so they are easy to notice.
The third point is especially important.
A phrase such as “Redesigned the architecture of an AI agent” tells recruiters little. A stronger version is: “Reduced agent response latency by two seconds and improved customer satisfaction.”
Ironically, Bain himself got into OpenAI by submitting a regular application through the company’s website.
Why it matters
AnalysisThe advice helps AI candidates demonstrate impact rather than listing tools or tasks, which matters in a fast-moving hiring market.
