US and Chinese Politicians Reject Startup Leaders' Call to Slow Down AI Development

Donald Trump and Chinese state media dismissed recent calls by AI startup founders for a pause in development, citing geopolitical competition and national security concerns.
Donald Trump stated that slowing down AI development is not an option, as it would cost the United States its leadership over China. "We are leading China in AI, we are the most technologically advanced country in the world, and frankly, I want it to stay that way," he said. Trump labeled proponents of a slowdown as "negative forces" raising concerns about things that, in his view, will not happen.
On the other side, Chinese officials dismissed the warnings from Demis Hassabis and other startup leaders as "intimidation," confrontation, and "malicious competition," arguing that such rhetoric would only hinder global AI governance. The Chinese state media outlet Global Times characterized their essay as an attempt to contain China and a game "in the spirit of the Cold War."
Consequently, the initiative to slow down AI development failed to gain traction among key geopolitical players and effectively collapsed before it even began.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis highlights the intensifying AI race between the US and China, where strategic advantage outweighs safety concerns. It suggests that international regulatory frameworks for AI may remain fragmented and driven by national interests rather than global consensus.

Function Calling / Tool Calling
A technical protocol and standard for LLM interaction with external software. Instead of free text, the model returns valid JSON containing the function name and typed arguments according to JSON Schema, enabling the backend to deterministically execute actions in real APIs.
Tool Calling (Function Calling)
A low-level mechanism in language models that enables them to reliably generate validated parameters in JSON format for executing functions in external programming environments.
