OpenAI releases Images 2.6: GIFs are now available in ChatGPT

Executive TL;DR30s read

OpenAI has introduced Images 2.6, enabling simple prompt-based GIF generation in ChatGPT and adding two new image models for developers.

OpenAI has released Images 2.6, bringing GIF generation to ChatGPT. Animations can be generated from a simple text prompt, with controls for speed, individual frames, and reference images.

For developers, the API now includes two new models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst.

  • Flare is very fast and can generate an image in just 6 seconds.
  • Sunburst is slightly slower but offers better quality and consistency when editing.

OpenAI also added the ability to save frequently used references. For example, you can save a photo of your dog, label it with a name, and then simply write “Spot” in a conversation; the model will retrieve the saved reference from memory.
