OpenAI Ends Partnership with Cursor Following SpaceX Acquisition

OpenAI has announced the termination of its partnership with Cursor after its acquisition by SpaceX for $60 billion. This decision stems from concerns about compliance with OpenAI's model usage terms.
OpenAI has announced that it will end its partnership with Cursor and plans to stop providing them with GPT series models starting November 12.
The reason is that Cursor was recently acquired by SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, for $60 billion.
In the contract between OpenAI and Cursor, there is a "change of control" clause that allows OpenAI to terminate the agreement within a certain period after Cursor is acquired by another company.
This time, OpenAI directly exercised this right.
What is particularly interesting is how OpenAI explained its decision.
The company stated that based on past experiences working with Elon Musk's companies, it cannot be sure that SpaceX will use these models in accordance with OpenAI's terms. OpenAI specifically mentioned past instances of contract violations by Musk's companies.
However, Cursor itself was not accused of any contract violations.
Cursor co-founder Michael Truell publicly responded to OpenAI, reminding that Cursor was one of the earliest clients of the company, they have collaborated for many years, and all this time they viewed OpenAI as a neutral infrastructure provider.
He also clarified that OpenAI models currently account for only about 5% of Cursor's user traffic.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis decision by OpenAI could significantly impact the AI market as it highlights the risks associated with partnerships with companies that have a controversial reputation. Understanding how such decisions can reshape the technology landscape is crucial.
