AI Race: West Calls for Caution, China Invests Billions in Self-Improvement
While US AI leaders call for slowing down development due to RSI risks, Chinese startup Z.ai plans to raise $50 billion to accelerate recursive self-improvement of GLM models.
While Dario Amodei (Anthropic), Sam Altman (OpenAI), Elon Musk, Demis Hassabis, and others have signed essays calling for a slowdown in frontier AI development due to the risks of Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI), Chinese startups are taking the opposite approach.
Company Z.ai has filed for listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, planning to raise $50 billion. According to the official document, about 60% of the funds will go towards training the next generation of GLM models and implementing the concept of Fully Self Training.
The goal is to create a closed loop where "the next generation of GLM is trained in an environment created by the previous generation." This includes:
- Self-generation of training data
- Generation of tasks and evaluation environments
- Infrastructure optimization
In the long term, the system is intended to operate autonomously, making decisions with minimal human intervention.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis highlights a strategic divergence: while the US focuses on safety pauses, China is aggressively funding the automation of the AI development process itself.
