Growth of AI Lab Computing Power

An interesting infographic from Epoch shows how quickly the computing power used by large labs is growing. Over two years, from December 2023 to December 2025, the amount of computing available to OpenAI has increased 17 times (by the end of 2025, likely surpassing Google DeepMind), while Anthropic's has grown 6 times in just 2025.

It's important to note that this data reflects end users, not the owners of the computing resources, as OpenAI and Anthropic rent all their computing power and do not build their own data centers. In contrast, the others on the list own their computing resources but do not utilize them fully. They are rented out and also used for other internal needs beyond AI labs, such as recommendation systems.

Most interesting is Google, which has recently managed to simultaneously spend computing power on large internal users outside of GDM, rent computing to Anthropic and smaller companies, and has even started renting GPUs from SpaceX AI. I do not envy the people who will try to calculate the amount of computing power at GDM by 2026.
