Anthropic: MCP Receives Major Update Since Launch
Anthropic has announced a significant update to the Model Context Protocol (MCP), marking the largest change since its launch. The main change is that the protocol now operates in a stateless mode. Previously, remote MCP servers had to store session states, complicating scaling and deployment across different types of infrastructure.
Now, MCP servers can be more easily launched in serverless environments, on edge infrastructure, and horizontally scaled using load balancers.
Additionally, extensions have become a full part of the protocol. Some examples include:
- MCP Apps — server interfaces within a
sandboxed iframe - Tasks — support for long-running and asynchronous operations
- Enterprise Managed Auth — centralized access management to MCP servers through an
identity provider
The release also strengthens authorization and introduces a formal deprecation policy.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis update is crucial for developers as it simplifies scaling and integration of MCP into various infrastructures. The new features enhance flexibility and efficiency when working with the protocol.
