Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard, enabling agents to control physical equipment in laboratories. This opens new possibilities for automating experiments.
Anthropic Launches Early Access to Model Hardware Standard for Controlling Physical Equipment
Anthropic has unveiled a new standard that allows models to control laboratories, including microscopes, liquid dispensers, and robotic manipulators. This standard was developed in collaboration with the HHMI Janelia research campus.
How It Works
Technically, the Model Hardware Standard is a standardized driver that stores metadata about the physical characteristics of devices and translates commands between the operating system and hardware through simple primitives. An agent accesses the system via MCP, CLI, or API and can literally control the laboratory through scripts.
Automation Prospects
This technology opens new horizons for automation and the mechanics of experiments. However, it is important to note that full autonomy is still a way off. Firstly, the developers themselves note that Claude's spatial and physical understanding is currently limited. Secondly, there is a serious safety issue.
Pilot Projects
Despite this, interesting pilots are already being conducted with partners. For instance, in the Genentech laboratory, Claude was involved in automating the BCA protein analysis.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis technology could significantly enhance the efficiency of laboratory research by automating routine processes. It also opens new opportunities for the development of autonomous systems in scientific research.
