Fine-tuning LLM on Phone: Boosting Accuracy to 90%
Fine-tuning LLM on Phone: Boosting Accuracy to 90%
Google engineer Cormac Brick explained how to fine-tune a tiny LLM directly on a phone and boost its accuracy from 46% to 90%.
The process is as follows:
- Choose Gemma 270M.
- Generate synthetic data for your task.
- Fine-tune the model using LoRA.
- Quantize it to int4.
- Deploy on Pixel and achieve speeds of up to 2000 tokens per second.
Thanks to this cycle, a model with 270 million parameters can outperform a model with 70 billion parameters in a specific task, all while functioning completely offline in your pocket.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis approach significantly enhances the efficiency of small models, making them competitive with larger models. It opens up new possibilities for AI usage on mobile devices.
