OpenAI Slows Down Model Development Due to Cybersecurity Risks

OpenAI has announced a slowdown in the development of new models due to cybersecurity risks associated with the HuggingFace incident.
OpenAI Slows Down Model Development Due to Cybersecurity Risks
Yesterday, OpenAI released a blog post stating that the incident with HuggingFace and the power of the internal model Astra prompted them to consider slowing down scaling.
Key Points:
- Two-week pause in RL training for models preparing for release (possibly Astra?) while strengthening the protection of training environments.
- Inference halted on research clusters for runs with internet/tool access to check the security of sandboxes. Limited access has now been restored, but for all workloads related to Astra, a maximum level of protection has been implemented, and some of these workloads are still on pause until they are migrated to new infrastructure.
- Expanded monitoring of chain-of-thought, with more alerts and monitoring at all stages of processes.
It sounds good, but the question arises: "Would a company like OpenAI engage in such pure altruism?"
At least, the timeline is suspiciously convenient, there is a lot of advertising for Astra in the text, and such a statement could serve both as a way to generate interest in the new model and as a justification in case of delays.
It makes sense to wait for a technical report.
Why it matters
AnalysisThis is important as security in AI model development is becoming an increasingly relevant topic, and OpenAI's decisions may impact future developments in the field.
