Executive TL;DR30s read

OpenAI has announced a new Ultrafast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol, promising significant inference speed improvements. The model can generate up to 750 tokens per second thanks to the new Cerebras architecture.

OpenAI Unveils Ultrafast Mode for GPT-5.6 Sol

This is the same inference on Cerebras. They promise a 14x acceleration (!), with the model capable of generating up to 750 tokens per second.
For a giant like Sol, this is simply monumental speed. It is achieved because the Wafer-Scale Engine architecture of Cerebras keeps the model weights directly on huge chips, eliminating the need to shuffle them between memory and storage.

In the video, there's a speedrun of HLE. The entire benchmark took just over 11 hours. In contrast, Claude Fable took nearly 80 hours for the same run.

Currently, the mode will only be available to a select group of users in the API, but it may soon reach regular users (though it will come at a hefty price).

Why it matters

Analysis

This new mode significantly enhances the performance of OpenAI models, which could greatly impact data processing speeds across various applications. It opens up new possibilities for developers and companies leveraging AI in their operations.
