US AI Market Slumps as Democrats Push Regulation and Data-Center Pause

AI and chip stocks fell after Democratic figures called for stricter oversight of frontier AI and a national moratorium on new AI data centers.
The US computing and AI market has faced pressure for some time, but conditions worsened after Democrats won the recent US elections and made AI regulation a priority.
Democrats declared AI regulation one of their main goals. In an X post on Wednesday, Congresswoman Yasamin Ansari wrote:
The top of the Democratic agenda should first be a pause in frontier AI development, regulation of this uncontrolled industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence.
In addition, Democrats Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez introduced legislation for a national moratorium on building AI data centers. Many supported it, including Frank Pallone, the senior Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Investors feared that new Democratic majorities could use an anti-data-center agenda to slow massive spending on AI infrastructure, and the market reacted immediately.
- Nvidia lost 9% (more than $400 billion in market capitalization)
- AMD fell 15.9%, Intel 8.3%, SpaceX 7%, Oracle 8%
- Nasdaq dropped nearly 5%, the worst session since April 2025
Trump publicly blamed Democrats for the decline. Democrats said the fall had begun before the elections and was driven more by a popping overheated AI bubble than by their statements.
