OpenAI Engineers Can't Explain Their Vibe Code
Analyst Jordan Nanos from SemiAnalysis, who collaborated with developers at OpenAI while they were testing their new inference chip Jalapeño on the InferenceX benchmark owned by SemiAnalysis, shared insights on this topic.
He states that individuals with impressive personal expertise were unable to explain line by line what the code does. The kernel (more specifically, the low-level Gluon assembler) in question was entirely generated in Codex. The developers did not delve into it in detail because everything just works.
Nanos believes this is normal and signifies a paradigm shift. Developers no longer need to write code or even understand it. A person only needs to formulate the task, set the architecture, and check the results against metrics.
The low-level code itself is not something a person necessarily needs to ponder deeply if AI knows how to manipulate data movement correctly and process it on the hardware provided.
