Claude Helps Discover Novel Molecular System for Gene Editing

Anthropic announced that Claude assisted in discovering a previously unknown molecular system, potentially a new mechanism for gene editing.
Anthropic announced that Claude helped discover a previously unknown molecular system that could potentially become a new mechanism for gene editing.
Claude was tasked with searching for interesting reverse transcriptases in a vast DNA database. These are enzymes that copy RNA into DNA.
Subsequently, about 950 Claude agents analyzed over 200,000 reverse transcriptases for 21 hours.
Then, one of the agents noticed a repeating DNA sequence near the enzyme — the same type of feature that once helped humans discover CRISPR. CRISPR is a natural defense system of bacteria against viruses, upon which precise DNA editing technologies are based. These technologies allow scientists to cut and modify specific DNA segments and are already used in real medical treatments.
Claude compared this pattern with known systems, studied the scientific literature, confirmed that no one had previously described it, and then prepared a full scientific report. Exactly as a researcher would have done.
Anthropic scientists verified the discovery in the lab. The system was named ART.
Its exact function is currently unknown, but initial signs suggest it may be programmable, similar to CRISPR, which can be targeted to specific DNA sites. If ART can indeed be turned into a new gene-editing tool, such systems could expand the possibilities for treating hereditary diseases caused by mutations and open new approaches to gene therapy for other diseases.

System 1 Decision Engine
System 1 Decision Engine is a fast, non-autoregressive decision layer for agents that replaces expensive autoregressive calls for routing, schema validation, and Guardrails. The architectural shift reduces p95 latency to 30–70 ms and token cost by 90%+ without losing control over the agentic loop.
