Sam Altman on RAM shortage: local model hosting is inefficient
Sam Altman argues that widespread local execution of AI models wastes limited DRAM resources and deepens the RAM shortage, while cloud infrastructure can be utilized more efficiently.
Sam Altman explained why there is a shortage of RAM: too many people keep it in their own PCs.
According to him, many people want to run AI models locally and somehow believe that the emergence of open-source models has already solved the problem. The assumption is that now they can run models on their own computers, so data-center infrastructure is no longer needed.
But from the perspective of global resource allocation, this is highly inefficient. Imagine that every home has a computer with a large amount of RAM, which accounts for a significant share of the world’s limited DRAM supply, but it is used only 5% of the time.
In conditions of such acute resource scarcity, it makes far more sense to maximize the utilization of cloud infrastructure.
«For some reason, the intuition of many people points in the opposite direction».
Why it matters
AnalysisAltman’s point reframes the local-versus-cloud AI debate as a resource-efficiency issue: DRAM, energy, and data-center capacity are finite, and idle local hardware can worsen scarcity.
